PHS DRAMA TO PRESENT HONK! 
3/1/2010 - Students at Pickens High School are polishing their dances and music for the Spring musical, HONK!, a family-friendly rendition of the Ugly Duckling fairy tale. The musical is to be presented in the Performing Arts Center at the high school March 25-27.
The cast, which consists of students in grades 9 through 12, were given their parts and scripts as soon as the Drama 2 class was formed in January. Meeting each afternoon in class, as well as in two all-day Saturday rehearsals, the students have experienced vocal coaching, singing in harmony, and new dance steps, as well as the challenges of working together as a team. Costumes, sets, and props are being borrowed, purchased, and rounded up from students’ homes. Members of the Drama 1 class, which meets each morning, are helping construct and paint the set.
Two seniors are featured in leads roles: Rachel Lawson as Ida the mother, and Andrew Carver as Ugly, the recipient of the barnyard’s jeers. Jazz Lorenz as the Cat entices Ugly away from his nest, forcing Ida to leave her other hatchlings with her incompetent mate, Drake, played by Cade Robertson. The play features several other students in important roles, as well as the ensemble in such rousing tunes as “A Poultry Tale” and “Someone’s Gonna Love Yer Warts and All.”
The play is performed March 25-27, Thursday through Saturday each evening at 7, with an additional matinee at 2 on Saturday, which features the traditional Tea Party at 12:30, where children and their parents or grandparents can meet cast members, eat a muffin, and drink some juice before the matinee. Admission that afternoon is $1.00 off regular ticket prices of $5.00 for students ages 5-17, and adults of $8.00. Marcia Wright directs the drama program at PHS.
